Today, on March 3, 1825 (Japan):
Japan’s 11th Yokozuna, SHIRANUI Kouemon (不知火光右衛門), born HARANO Minematu (原野峰松), was born in Kumamoto, Japan. Yokozuna is the highest rank one can achieve in Sumo, Japan’s famous form of wrestling. He made his debut in Osaka in 1847 (22), under the guidance of SHIRANUI Dakuemon (不知火諾右衛門), another former Yokozuna.
It took 16 years before he would reach the Yokozuna title; probably because he may not have been the best–but he was popular with the crowds and had excellent techniques.
A style of entering the Sumo ring (dohyouiri), is attributed and named after SHIRANUI Kouemon — even though there is a debate as to what style SHIRANUI actually used.
SHIRANUI ended his career with 119 wins and 35 losses and retired in 1869 (44).
