We are seeing an escalation in Tit for Tat; as China does one thing, and the Philippines counters, China takes it a step higher, and the Philippines responds in kind. Are we headed into a “death spiral” as famed political scientist Axelrod projects?
Today the Philippines have announced they are building a port within Ulugan Bay, the closest military base to the Spratly islands, the area disputed with China. Manila believes this will increase its position and provide a “credible deterrent” to avoid conflict with China over the disputed territory.
Right now, the Philippines have two US Coast Guard frigates and hopes to acquire six more to protect its waters. In the past, when one frigate engaged with China’s Coast Guard but backed down; subsequently, the Philippines then lodged its formal protest in the United Nations.
…but the next time, will the Philippines back down? Or will they call for reinforcements, which will obviously be closer than China’s… I’d like to hear your opinions.
